New English Language Tests

In a recent announcement, IRCC has unveiled its decision to accept language test results from four additional tests for applicants under the Student Direct Stream. Starting from August 10, 2023, these newly approved tests will be recognized by IRCC.

The four newly eligible language tests are as follows:

  • PTE Academic
  • TOEFL iBT Test
  • CELPIP General
  • CAEL

As part of the recent updates, IRCC has introduced specific criteria for language test results to be considered valid for SDS applicants. To demonstrate proficiency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing, applicants must meet the following requirements for each test:

  • CELPIP General – A minimum score equivalent to Canadian Language Benchmark 7 is required for each of the four language-speaking abilities.
  • CAEL and Pearson PTE Academic – A minimum score of 60 is necessary to fulfill the language proficiency criteria.
  • Educational Testing Service (ETS) TOEFL iBT Test – Applicants must achieve a minimum score of 83.

It’s important to note that these tests must be taken in person, and online or remotely proctored versions will not be accepted for SDS applicants. Previously, only IELTS General and IELTS Academic were approved by IRCC for SDS applicants.

Understanding the Student Direct Stream (SDS) Program

The Student Direct Stream (SDS) program provides a streamlined process for the expedited processing of study permits, designed explicitly for students hailing from certain countries. Eligible students must be legal residents of the following countries:

  • Brazil
  • China
  • Colombia
  • Costa Rica
  • India
  • Morocco
  • Pakistan
  • Peru
  • Philippines

Canada Welcomes Over 800,000 International Students to its Shores

According to the latest report from IRCC, Canada proudly hosted a record-breaking number of over 800,000 international students by the end of 2022. This remarkable milestone marks a quadruple increase in Canada’s international student population since 2008, driven by domestic and global factors.

On the domestic front, the Canadian government and Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs) have made concerted efforts to recruit international students actively. This strategy is motivated by various economic, social, and cultural benefits that international students bring to the country.

Internationally, the rise in the global middle class has contributed to the growing number of international students worldwide. In this context, Canada stands out as an appealing destination, renowned for its exceptional quality of education, commitment to multiculturalism, and tailored work and immigration opportunities.

Canada’s ability to attract and retain such a significant number of international students underscores its reputation as a preferred choice for pursuing higher education and building a promising future.
