This initiative was introduced with the release of a report by IRCC. Titled “Shaping the Future of Immigration in Canada.”

The Canadian government recently unveiled a comprehensive report outlining its conclusions and strategy regarding the future of Canada’s immigration system.

Contained within this report is IRCC’s commitment to establish an advisory board comprising individuals who have personally experienced immigration. This board will be pivotal in shaping policy development and enhancing service delivery.

IRCC underscores that this action is a key element of its efforts to foster a more inclusive environment for newcomers. Specifically, the advisory council is designated to facilitate improved communication and uphold a “people-centered” approach to Canada’s immigration system.

Further Information on IRCC’s Fresh Advisory Council

As a demonstration of the government’s commitment to recognizing that individuals who engage with Canada’s immigration system are more than mere statistics. The IRCC affirms that its service delivery approach must acknowledge the unique needs and circumstances of those who navigate Canada’s immigration processes. Including individuals, families, and employers who are making life-altering decisions.

As a part of this initiative, IRCC has outlined its intention to establish an advisory body that will actively involve individuals with “lived experience in immigration.” These individuals will play a crucial role in providing insights and assistance to enhance the development of policies and programs while ensuring that Canada’s immigration system remains centered on a people-first approach.

This advisory council will comprise Canadian newcomers with a diverse range of perspectives and experiences within Canada’s immigration system. Their backgrounds may span from temporary residents. Such as international students and foreign workers, to permanent residents.

IRCC will provide additional information about the forthcoming advisory board later. This isn’t the initial instance in which IRCC has sought public input on immigration issues. You can find more about IRCC’s history of public consultations below. This is IRCC’s inaugural advisory council exclusively focused on the perspectives of newcomers to Canada who have direct, firsthand experience with the country’s immigration system.

IRCC’s Tradition of Seeking Public Input on Immigration

IRCC maintains a consistent practice of engaging with the Canadian public to inform its decision-making processes regarding immigration programs and policies.

In 2023, the immigration department has already issued consultation reports covering various aspects of the nation’s immigration landscape. These reports encompass topics such as immigration levels, the broader immigration system within the country. The very consultation that led to the establishment of the advisory council as a part of IRCC’s action plan. And the implementation of category-based draws, which were introduced earlier in the year.
