The Canadian government is set to commence a new three-year immigration pilot designed to support Canada’s growing agri-food industry
In a statement, the government writes:
“To help the agri-food sector meet Canada’s ambitious export targets and attract and retain needed labour, the federal government will launch a three-year immigration pilot to bring in full time, non-seasonal agricultural workers that will include a pathway to permanent residency.”
The Canadian Meat Council (CMC) has expressed support for the pilot. In a statement, they say that they have requested foreign workers to fill 2,750 job vacancies in areas such as meatpacking and meat processing.
According to Industry Canada’s Agri-Food Economic Strategy Table report released in September 2018, the country is facing serious labour shortages in the agricultural sector, and the government must utilize immigration programs to attract foreign workers.
Canada’s agriculture and agri-food industry contributes $111 billion to the economy every year and $304 million every day.
