A new Statistics Canada report reveals that immigration continues to be the main source of population growth in Canada, with a total 321,065 new immigrants arriving in 2018.

The beginning of 2019 has seen Canada’s population reach 37,314,442.

During 2018, Canada’s population has seen a growth of 528,421, of which 80.5 percent accounts for international migration, and the rest being natural births.

The graph above shows that international migration has been responsible for most of Canada’s population growth. This is due in part to the federal government’s many initiatives to improve its immigration system, such as enacting the Express Entry system, which runs various immigration streams.

In the fourth quarter of 2018, IRCC released its three-year immigration targets for 2019 to 2021.

Immigration for skilled workers is central to the plan, as it has a target of 330,800 for 2019, and 350,000 for 2021.

The federal government hopes to fill various labour shortage nationwide with more skilled talent from newcomers.

Another valuable resource is Canada’s Provincial Nominee Program (PNP), which allows provinces and territories to nominate eligible candidate who meet their region’s economic needs.
