Adding a touch of authenticity, Whoop-Up Days brings rain on August 22, 2023, as over 100 floats glide through downtown Lethbridge for the annual parade kickstart. Undeterred by the weather, a multitude of onlookers savored the spectacle. Lethbridge and District Exhibition’s CEO, Mike Warkentin, expressed joy in the community turnout.
This parade acts as a unifying tradition older than Lethbridge itself, said Warkentin, underlining its significance in fostering community spirit. The parade route stretched from Park Place Mall, meandering past Galt Gardens, down 13th Street, culminating at Galbraith Elementary School. Despite the downpour, the event ignited the city’s pride and camaraderie.
The festive atmosphere endured throughout the morning, elevated by the enthusiasm of float participants who kept spirits high.
A Southland Trailers representative, decorated as Miss Frizzle from the Magic School Bus, quipped. “Weather doesn’t faze us; a little drizzle won’t dampen our spirit.”
Furthermore, a dedicated Bella Elite Beauty Academy instructor shared that her students had worked late into the night perfecting their themed float.
“This year, we embraced a Western Barbie concept. Imagine doing hair and makeup like adult barbies. It’s all in good fun.”
In addition, among the local displays, a Town of Vulcan council member beamed with pride, relishing the chance to showcase their legacy.
“Our presence here promotes our town and its unique Star Trek association. Live long and prosper.”
